Shubman Gill is upset with himself for wasting starts.

Shubman Gill is upset with himself for wasting starts. Gill scored 64 and 43 in two One-Day Internationals against the West Indies.

Shubman Gill, India’s rising star, has been batting exceptionally well in the ongoing ODI series against the West Indies, with two solid starts. The right-hander has been content to play his shots on the powerplay and has taken an aggressive approach. The 22-year-old was recall to the ODI squad for the series after being out for more than a year. He has responded admirably thus far.

Gill batted brilliantly for 64 runs in the first ODI to set the tone for the Indian team to post a big total. But he was out by a run out. He quickly reached 43 in the second ODI, and he looked impressive in both innings, despite not yet reaching the three-figure mark. It’s no surprise he was disappointed by his inability to convert good starts.

It was critical for me to repay that trust: Shubman Gill

Gill expressed disappointment with himself for failing to reach a century. Despite a strong start and stated that the two innings had significantly increased his confidence. He hoped for a big score in the final One-Day International and was proud to represent his country in international cricket. He overjoyed to have repaid the trust placed in him and believes that opening with an experienced batter like Shikhar Dhawan has taught him a lot.

“Unfortunately, I was unable to convert those starts into a hundred, and I am angry with myself for that,” Gill said to the media.

“They gave me a lot of confidence.” The West Indies are a good team, and we put up two good totals, one batting first and one chasing. I’m hoping to go big in the third match. “I’m hoping to convert the kind of starts I’ve been getting into big innings,” the youngster added.

“(Asking to open) boosted my confidence. It feels good to be given the opportunity to play a game for India, especially at the international level. It was important for me to repay that trust, and I was delighted to help the team’s cause. Opening the batting with Shikhar has been fantastic. He has a lot of experience and has played all over the world, and I’m learning a lot from him,” he added.
