Established in 2011 by Cricket Australia, the Big Bash League (BBL) is Australia’s primary T20 competition which features eight city-based franchises throughout the nation. Two franchises are based in Sydney and Melbourne, while Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, and Hobart have one respective franchise each. A short summary of each team can be found below.
The Big Bash League has been in operation since the 2011-12 season, with this being one of the biggest professional cricket tournaments in the world. This is a Twenty20 cricket competition played between Australian franchises, with eight teams competing for major honours and it’s hugely popular from a betting perspective.
The Big Bash League tends to run over a two-month period and takes place in the months of December and January. This is when the Australian summer is in full swing, with the competition beginning in early December and the finals tend to be played at the end of January.
Over the years, the tournament has attracted some of the best T20 players in the world, as each team is allowed a maximum of two overseas players in a match. In recent editions of the tournament, innovative and new cricket ideas and concepts have been introduced. For example, the Draft (pre-tournament draft for overseas players), the Power Surge (extra powerplay overs), Bash Boost (bonus point opportunity), and the X-Factor player (ability to make a substitute during a game), which is also about to be implemented in IPL 2023.
Played from December to February each year, the tournament is broken up into two phases, a round-robin format where each team plays each other home and away before the top five break away to compete in the BBL Finals Series:
The Eliminator (Fourth v Fifth)
The Qualifier (First v Second)
The Knock-Out (Third v Winner of The Eliminator)
The Challenger (Loser of The Qualifier v Winner of The Knock-Out)
The Final (Winner of The Qualifier v Winner of The Challenger)
The tournament format is not dissimilar to the Indian Premier League in that there is a double round-robin before a knockout format. After all of the teams have competed against each other twice during the regular season, we get to the finals stage of the competition. This includes the top five teams in the overall Big Bash League standings, with The Eliminator pitching the 4th and 5th placed teams against each other.
The winner then goes through to clash in The Knockout where they meet the third-placed side, while The Qualifier will see the first and second-placed teams clash for a place in the Grand Final. The other final spot comes down to the winner of The Challenger, with this taking place between The Qualifier loser and The Knockout Winner.
The Strikers had a slow start to BBL life, failing to qualify for the play-offs for the first three tournaments. In 2015 and 2016 they reached the last four before finally getting their hands on the trophy for the one and only time in 2018 after beating the Hurricanes by 25 runs in the final.
Some of the world’s finest overseas players have graced the turf of the Adelaide Oval, including Mahela Jayawardene, Rashid Khan, Kieron Pollard and Shakid Al Hasan.
Adelaide Strikers were founded in 2011, with the team playing in a distinctive blue kit. They play their home games at the iconic Adelaide Oval. They achieved their first and only BBL victory during the 2017/18 season, with Peter Siddle and Rashid Khan being some of the notable bowlers who have played for them.
Brisbane Heat were also founded in 2011 and they operate in a teal outfit, with The Gabba where this team operate in front of their own supporters. The Heat didn’t take long to secure their first triumph considering they were successful in their second season when operating in the BBL, with the team beating the Perth Scorchers.
The Hurricanes are one of two BBL sides yet to get their hands on the trophy, coming closest in 2018 when they were beaten by 25 runs in the final by Adelaide Strikers. They followed that up by topping the table in 2019 before losing in the semi-final while last year they were beaten in the Eliminator.
This BBL franchise play in a distinctive purple kit, with Hobart Hurricanes being based in Tasmania. You can see them play at home at the Bellerive Oval or the University of Tasmania Stadium, with the Hurricanes having been runners-up on two occasions although yet to land a maiden victory.
After losing narrowly in the semi-finals in 2018, the Renegades went one better the following year by winning the tournament for the first time after a 13-run win over their city rivals in the final.
The Renegades are one of two Melbourne teams who compete in the Big Bash League. The Docklands Stadium plays host to the games involving a BBL franchise who claimed their first title in the 2018/19 season. Dan Christian, Cameron Boyce, Harry Gurney and Usman Shinwari were some of the leading lights.
Melbourne Stars are also known as Team Green and they have a healthy rivalry with Melbourne Renegades. The Melbourne Cricket Ground is the iconic venue and this has a 100,000 capacity, with the Stars still searching for that elusive first title.
The Scorchers are the most successful BBL franchise, with the Perth Twenty20 cricket team having won no less than four titles. They won their first Big Bash League during the 2013-14 season, with further successes coming in 2015, 2017 and 2022. They have also been runners-up on three occasions.
Sydney Sixers are one of the most successful BBL franchises in the history of the Big Bash League. They also claimed a Champions League T20 victory in 2012, with the team playing their matches at Sydney Cricket Ground. The Sixers won their first ever BBL title in 2011-12, while they also claimed domestic crowns in 2020 and 2021.
The Thunder were also-rans for the first four years of the BBFl, finishing bottom of the points table for the first three campaigns before going one better and finishing seventh in 2015. From nowhere they hit form in 2016 and won the tournament after crushing the Strikers in the semis before going on to edge out the Stars by three wickets in the final.
The second BBL franchise based in Sydney are the Thunder. They play their matches at the Sydney Showground Stadium. The team in lime green won the fifth edition of the Big Bash League, with the team proving successful in the 2015-16 season.

Adelaide Strikers
Adelaide Strikers have won the BBL just once — in the 2017-18 season. Last year, they were a team that did just enough to make the playoffs but not enough to truly contend. A mere 5/10 team, the Strikers finished the round-robin stage right in the middle (5th spot in eight-team division). They somehow sneaked into the playoffs but got bounced in the very first game.
This year, the Strikers have re-signed several key players. Veteran pacer Peter Siddle is signed up for another year, while prolific scorer Jake Weatherald has inked a long-term deal. Matt Short and Ryan Gibson have new contracts as well, but the news of the off-season was the successful retention of Afghan spin wizard Rashid Khan. Fellow spinner Fawad Ahmed is also on the roster, while George Garton has been imported from England. Michael Neser, however, has left Adelaide for Brisbane.
Brisbane Heat
Brisbane Heat’s story is not very different than Adelaide Strikers’. They also have a single BBL triumph, which came in the 2012-13 season and since then they’ve been waiting to add to their trophy cabinet. Last season, they made the playoffs and cleared the first hurdle, beating none other than Adelaide in the Eliminator game before being eliminated themselves before taking down Sydney Thunder in the Knockout game. With just one more win left between them and a place in the final, they fell to Perth Scorchers.
This year, the Heat re-signed rising pacer Xavier Bartlett, star batsman Marnus Labuschagne, spin wizard Mujeeb Ur Rahman and allrounder Jack Wildermuth. English duo Tom Abell and Ben Duckett are also in the bag but their fellow Englishman Tom Banton has been allowed to miss the tournament on his request. Meanwhile, Michael Neser has returned from Adelaide, whereas there has also been a leadership change, with Jimmy Peirson replacing Chris Lynn. Connor Sully has also found a place on the roster.
Sydney Sixers
Sydney Sixers are the hottest team in the BBL right now. They won the inaugural BBL way back in 2011-12 season, but had to wait eight long years for their next title, during which time they were the losing finalists on two occasions. But after recapturing the title in 2019-20 season, they did it again last year as well, which makes them the league’s two-time defending champions going for a first-ever three-peat.
During the offseason, they’ve retained much of their title-winning core by re-signing experienced seamer Jackson Bird, English star James Vince, Windies allrounder Carlos Brathwaite, spinner Stephen O’Keefe, captain Moises Henriques and key fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis.
Sydney Thunder
The lesser of the two Sydney sides, the Thunder do their best to catch up to the Sixers but just can’t. They made the final just once, in 2015-16, and won the title but have had mixed form since then. Last year, they finished third in the round-robin stages and were eliminated in the knockout game of the playoffs, which was a step earlier than their challenger game elimination the year prior.
To take that next leap and make the final again, the Thunder have parted ways with their captain Callum Ferguson as well as coach Shane Bond, the latter of whom has been replaced by Trevor Bayliss and former by Usman Khawaja. Fast bowler Brendan Doggett, young talents Ollie Davies and Baxter Holt, star batter Alex Hales, and exciting hitter Jason Sangha have all been re-signed while Sam Billings has travelled across the Sydney divide to join the Thunder. Also on board is England pace merchant Saqib Mahmood.
Perth Scorchers
Like Sydney Sixers, Perth Scorchers are the Big Bash League’s other perennial contenders, and that has seen them clinch three titles and just as many runners-up finishes. Their best stretch was between 2013 and 2017 when they won three of the four titles and were simply unstoppable at times. They made the final last year where they were beaten by the Sixers.
During the off-season, they re-signed batting veteran Colin Munro as well as key quartet of Jason Behrendorff, Josh Inglis, Ashton Turner and Andrew Tye. Tearaway pacer Lance Morris joined from Melbourne Stars, while spinner Peter Hatzoglou replaced Fawad Ahmed. England’s Laurie Evans and Brydon Carse were signed but only the former will be in action as the latter was ruled out due to a knee injury.
Hobart Hurricanes
Hobart Hurricanes are one of just two sides left in the league that have never won a BBL title. The Hurricanes came close twice, once in the 2013-14 season and then in the 2017-18 season but lost in the final both of those times. They had a lackluster campaign last year but still should have made the playoffs as they finished the round-robin stage level with the Strikers on 28 points but were edged out on the smallest of net run rate differences.
During the off-season, the Canes had Ben McDermott, Nathan Ellis and captain Matthew Wade’s contracts extended. Nepal spinner Sandeep Lamichhane was also re-signed and so was Caleb Jewell. They also brought back Tom Rogers from the Sixers, while importing England’s Harry Brook and signing Josh Kann.
Melbourne Stars
Melbourne Stars are the other BBL side that has never won a league title, even though they came close and lost in the final thrice. Last season was tough for both the Melbourne sides, with neither making the playoffs. But such a showing was harder to digest for the Stars, who had made the finals the previous two seasons and expected another year of contention but all they got was a seventh-place finish in an eight-team league.
Ahead of BBL 11, the Stars have added experienced batter Joe Burns, English batter/wicketkeeper Joe Clarke and Afghanistan international Qais Ahmad to their roster, while re-signing left arm pace bowler Sam Rainbird, batter Nick Larkin, young quick Liam Hatcher, young gun Sam Elliott and allrounder Hilton Cartwright.
Melbourne Renegades
2018-19 champs Melbourne Renegades were the league’s worst team last season, winning just four of their 14 matches and finishing at the bottom. It was a little improvement on their performance of the season before when they had again finished dead last.
To address their alarming slide, the Renegades have made a number of changes, including the replacement of coaches. To their roster, they have signed batter Nic Maddinson from the other Melbourne side and instantly made him the captain. Afghan spin bowler Zahir Khan is on board and so is the first Indian player to play BBL, Unmukt Chand.
