“It’s the same thing I said… I specifically demanded that he (Kohli) not relinquish his T20I captaincy. Clearly, he was overburdened. That’s good; he’s a brilliant cricketer who has put in a lot of effort in his game.

Sourav Ganguly requested Virat Kohli not to quit his T20I captaincy.

He has been the captain for a long time, and things like this happen. Because I’ve been a captain for a long time, I’m well-versed on the subject. They also only wanted one white-ball captain. And it is for this reason that we have made this decision. I have no idea what will happen in the future. But, as I have stated, it is a good squad with some fantastic players, and I am hopeful that they will turn things around,” Ganguly told News 18.\

Kohli highlighted workload management as a factor in his decision to step down as T20I captain.

“Understanding workload is a very important thing,” Kohli said at the time. “And considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all three formats. And captaining regularly for the last 5-6 years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian team in Test and ODI cricket.”
