Four takeaways from Bayern Munich’s 4-0 Champions League thumping of S.L. Benfica.

Four takeaways, FC Bayern Munich played S.L. Benfica in the Champions League tonight, in a venue they are all too familiar with.

SL Benfica v Bayern München: Group E - UEFA Champions League

Bayern Munich appears to be cursed by the curse of the woodwork for the rest of their lives. During this match, I counted no fewer than three occasions when Bayern had a great chance or opportunity thwarted by the troublesome woodwork. Add in the two VAR-assaulted goals, and this night had all the hallmarks of a night in which Bayern was doomed to fail to score no matter how hard they tried.

Four takeaways, Despite his poor “post” luck, Leroy Sané managed to score a magnificent free-kick (more on that later) that finally burst the game’s figurative seal.

Both keepers kept their teams in the game with some excellent saves (as well as some “post” luck). Making it a nail-biter until Bayern ultimately broke through in the 70th minute. To be honest, Odysseas Vlachodimos deserves a pat on the back for his valiant efforts. Bayern would have been up two or three goals before halftime if it hadn’t been for the presence of Superman. The same may be said for Neuer, including the above-mentioned rescue. Even with the merciless 4-0 result, this was a goalie masterclass on both sides.

Four takeaways: In prime form

Bayern looked fantastic tonight, despite some unlucky woodwork luck. Yes, there were defensive lapses, but the attack and midfield just outclassed S.L. Benfica. Leroy Sané was — pardon the pun — inSané. He has developed into the lethal attacker that Bayern and we envisioned when we were involved in that dreadful transfer process with Manchester City.

Even though he had to cope with an annoyance in the form of Nicolás Otamendi, Robert Lewandowski was his usual clinical self. Manuel Neuer is proving why he is still the best goalkeeper in the world, and the defense is starting to gel, with Lucas Hernandez, Niklas Süle, and Dayot Upamecano forming an efficient trio.
