Shreyas Iyer analyzes KKR’s first loss of IPL 2024

Shreyas Iyer analyzes KKR’s first loss of IPL 2024. KKR struggled to make an impact in Chennai, scoring only 137 runs and eventually losing by seven wickets.

In an unexpected twist, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) suffered their first loss of the season in the Indian Premier League, with captain Shreyas Iyer blaming the defeat on the difficult Chennai surface.

KKR struggled to make an impact in their match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 8th, collecting only 137 runs and eventually losing by seven wickets. In a post-match statement, Iyer cited the Chepauk pitch’s unexpected character as a major factor in their poor performance.

“We had a fantastic start in the powerplay, but we lost consecutive wickets. We were unable to swiftly assess the conditions following the powerplay, and scoring runs was difficult. They (CSK) know the conditions well, and they bowled according to plan. It wasn’t easy to pursue them from the first ball. We were attempting to create the innings, but it didn’t go as planned,” Shreyas Iyer told the broadcaster after the game.

While KKR’s bowlers struggled to defend their low total, CSK easily chased down the goal in 17.4 overs, securing a convincing victory.

We thought 160-170 was a good score, but we lost momentum.: Iyer

CSK’s all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was the standout performer, capturing three key wickets for just 18 runs. His excellent bowling, combined with Tushar Deshpande and Mustafizur Rahman, demolished the KKR batting order.

“The wicket changed following the powerplay. We were at ease and thought 160-170 was a fair result, but we lost momentum. We need to start over and learn from our mistakes. I’m delighted that happened in the beginning of the competition. When we return, we are very familiar with the situations in our home. We need to analyze the events and make the greatest use of them,” Iyer said.

Despite the setback, KKR remains near the top of the league table, however their unbeaten record has ended. As they prepare for forthcoming matches, the players will focus on improving their batting and adapting to diverse pitch conditions.
