Who will captain CSK after MS Dhoni? CEO Kasi Viswanathan reveals team’s future plans. MS Dhoni is expected to retire after the IPL 2024 season.

MS Dhoni, the legendary Chennai Super Kings captain, is set to lead his team for the 15th season of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Notably, Dhoni is the joint-most successful captain in IPL history, having led CSK to five titles. Since Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket in 2020, there has been widespread speculation that he will also retire from the IPL.

However, the 42-year-old has returned year after year, leading his team to championship victories in 2021 and 2023. The wicketkeeper-batsman is expect to retire in the coming season, and speculation about CSK’s next captain has already begun. Recently, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan revealed the team’s plans for Dhoni’s successor. Viswanath added that CSK owner N Srinivasan has left it up to the captain and coach to decide who will take over the captaincy after Dhoni.

“In internal discussions, Srinivasan made it abundantly clear. Let’s not discuss captain and vice-captain appointments. Let’s leave the decision to the coach and captain. In an interview with S Badrinath on the latter’s YouTube show, Viswanathan stated that “the captain and the coach will decide and give us a directive; until then, let us all keep quiet.”

Viswanathan also revealed Dhoni’s plans for each season, stating that the captain’s primary goal is always to win league games.

“Before each season, MS Dhoni tells us, ‘First, let us focus on league games. “We will try to qualify for the knockouts,” Viswanathan added.

Notably, during the post-match presentation of last year’s final, Dhoni promised his fans that he would return for the following season in recognition of the admiration he had received throughout India. The wicketkeeper batter battled a knee injury throughout the 2023 edition and produced vintage-level batting at a strike rate of 182.46, his highest ever in a single season.
