Why is Nat Sciver-Brunt leading MI Women instead of Harmanpreet Kaur Vs UP Warriorz? Mumbai Indians made a few changes to their lineup for Match 6 versus UP Warriorz.

Mumbai Indians Women (MI-W) continued their Women’s Premier League 2024 campaign on Wednesday, February 28, when they faced UP Warriorz in Match 8 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. However, the reigning champions suffered a major blow ahead of the encounter when skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was ruled out, forcing Nat Sciver Brunt to take over as captain.

Speaking at the toss, Sciver-Brunt explained that Harmanpreet had a niggle before of the game. The team management decided to rest her since they didn’t want to risk her so early in the competition.

“Harman has a niggle; it’s too early in the competition, so we wanted to rest her. Shabmin Ismail has a niggle and misses out as well. Harman has guided us effectively, and I have learned a few things from her. There were a lot of chants for RCB. We also managed to silence the audience,” Sciver-Brunt noted at the toss.

Apart from Harmanpreet, MI experienced another injury setback when veteran seamer Shabnim Ismail was ruled out of the match due to a niggle. As a result, MI signed Humaira Kazi and Issy Wong as replacements for the two players.

Harmanpreet Kaur is the leading run-scorer in the event so far

Notably, Harmanpreet will be a huge loss for MI, as she has been in exceptional form in the competition so far, scoring 101 runs from two innings at an average of 101 and a strike rate of 134.66, with one half-century to her name. She hit a stunning 55 (34) in the season opener against Delhi, including seven fours and a six to help her team chase down 172.

She also hit an undefeated 46* (41) against the Gujarat Giants, helping her team comfortably reach the target of 127 in 18.1 overs. In her absence, Mumbai will face a daunting task of maintaining their winning momentum, as they are currently sitting second on the points table following two wins in their first two games. Meanwhile, UP skipper Alyssa Healy won the toss and asked Mumbai to bat first.
