Why did MS Dhoni turn down the IPL Marquee Player offer?

Why did MS Dhoni turn down the IPL Marquee Player offer? MS Dhoni is the joint-most successful captain in IPL history, having led Chennai Super Kings to five titles.

Only a few cricketers can match MS Dhoni in terms of cricketing intelligence. The renowned cricketer has won numerous matches for his team only on the strength of his leadership. However, in one of his latest interviews, the world saw just how clever and devious he is off the field.

The wicketkeeper-batsman was the highest-paid player in the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) auction in 2008. Dhoni, who had a base price of $400,000, was signed by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for a stunning $1.5 million (about Rs 6 crore). The 42-year-old claimed that he was approached by a franchise to become IPL Marquee Player, but he politely declined the offer in order to enter the auction. He expected to command a higher bid at the auction after leading India to the T20 World Cup title in 2007.

“When the announcement was made for five marquee players, a certain team approached me about being one of them. I needed to make a rapid decision. As captain of the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning squad, I expected to receive a million dollars. So I decided to take a risk and participate in the auction. If two of the three teams without marquee players expressed interest in me, along with the other organizations, this would boost my chances of receiving a bigger price,” MS Dhoni told Star Sports.

MS Dhoni has won five IPL titles with Chennai Super Kings

Ultimately, the move paid off handsomely for Dhoni. After joining CSK, Dhoni was named captain, and he quickly became one of Chennai’s favorite sons, as well as the franchise’s face. Under his leadership, Chennai won the coveted IPL title five times. They also became the first team to win the IPL in consecutive years.

The inspirational captain led CSK to their fifth title last year and will look to repeat his success in the IPL 2024, which is expected to be his final season. Even though he had knee problems in the IPL 2023, he remained upbeat. He underwent surgery following the tournament and is currently sweating it out in preparation for the upcoming season. One more IPL title will propel him past Rohit Sharma, who has also won five IPL titles as captain.
