Former India cricketer Sanjay Bangar has been named head of cricket development for Punjab Kings for the IPL 2024 season. Bangar has also previously worked with the Punjab Kings. Where he was an assistant coach in 2014 before being named head coach for the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
The 51-year-old will work with head coach Trevor Bayliss in a capacity similar to that of director of cricket. Bangar will also be present in the IPL 2024 auction on December 19 in Dubai.

Notably, with Bangar as their assistant coach, Punjab reached their first-ever IPL final in 2014. However, with Bangar as Head Coach, they ended at the bottom of the points table in the next two editions. Following his tenure as head coach with Punjab, the Maharashtra-born player served as batting coach for the Indian team that advanced to the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-finals.

Bangar then joined Royal Challengers Bangalore as a batting consultant ahead of the IPL 2021 season. Then named their head coach for the following two years till the 2023 season.
Following another poor season in 2023 in which RCB failed to make the playoffs, the organization did not renew the contracts of Bangar and Director of Cricket Operations Mike Hesson, instead choosing Andy Flower as head coach.
Meanwhile, Kings released just five players before of the IPL 2024 auction, including Tamil Nadu finisher Shahrukh Khan, adding INR 9 crore to their current purse of INR 29.1 crore.
