Ben Stokes recalls dealing with personal demons.

Ben Stokes recalls dealing with personal demons. Stokes is the current England Test captain.

Ben Stokes’ on-field story is nothing short of inspirational. After being clobbered for four consecutive sixes in the 2016 T20 World Cup final. He delivered a match-winning knock in the 2019 ODI World Cup final, guiding England to their first title triumph. More than a month later, he followed it up with an exhilarating century at the Headingley Test, chasing a mammoth target and helping the Three Lions tie the Ashes series at 1-1.

However, the temperament of a true warrior is determine when his back is against the wall. Stokes had to go through such a phase, which was the lowest point in his personal life. The ace all-rounder struggled with mental health issues that kept him out of action for a while, and he also lost his father. When ask about that period, Ben says it was a ‘vulnerable feeling.’

I’m not going down without a fight: Ben Stokes

“The phoenix on my arm means a lot to me.” I can come back no matter what happens. That applies not only to sports but also to life. I’ve experienced some incredible highs and lows on and off the field, and I’m not going down without a fight. “I’ll come back as hard as I possibly can,” Stokes said, according to Stuff.co.nz.

“To be honest, it’s all a blur. In terms of his anxiety, he described it as “a very vulnerable feeling that I couldn’t understand or control.” Furthermore, the southpaw stated that he had decided to withdraw from the game entirely on the advice of his clinical psychologist.

“He said I needed to step away from cricket completely.” Even down to my diet and exercise, as well as watching or thinking about the game. Cricket had been everything for so long, but he said I needed to get as far away from it as possible because something would eventually bring me back.”

Stokes eventually turned his tragedies into triumphs. He was named England’s Test captain earlier this year. The Three Lions have won four of their last five home Tests under him and red-ball coach Brendon McCullum (3-0 against New Zealand and a one-off contest against India to level the series 2-2).

Nonetheless, they suffered an innings defeat in the first Test against WTC table-toppers South Africa. The Ben Stokes-led side will be hoping to make amends in the second game, which will take place on August 25 at Old Trafford in Manchester.
