Ben Stokes’ ODI retirement should serve as a wake-up call to those in charge of the game:  Jos Buttler

Ben Stokes’ ODI retirement should serve as a wake-up call to those in charge of the game:  Jos Buttler. Stokes’ last ODI was against South Africa on July 19.

England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, believes Ben Stokes’ shocking retirement from 50-over cricket should serve as a “wake-up call” to those in charge of the game. On July 19, the left-handed batter faced South Africa in his final 50-over match.

Stokes dismissed after scoring just five runs in his final ODI and was costly with the ball, bowling five overs and giving away 44 runs for no wickets as the Three Lions lost by 62 runs.

It’s a shame that Ben is no longer available for ODIs:  Jos Buttler

“It should definitely serve as a wake-up call.” Absolutely. Especially given the player’s stature. Ben is one of the most recognizable players in the world, and everyone wants to see him play in every format. “I’m sure there’s more to it than schedules and so on, but I think in international cricket you always want your best players playing if possible,” Buttler said after Stokes’ final one-day international on Tuesday.

“As an England fan, it’s bittersweet.” It’s a shame that Ben is no longer available in this version of the game. However, our loss in ODIs will almost certainly be England’s gain in Test cricket. That’s his preferred format and priority, especially now that he’s captain, and I’m sure it will give him much more longevity in the game’s purest form,” Butter added.

Previously, Stokes stated that he is unable to contribute to ODI cricket and that someone else should take his place. When it comes to ODI statistics, Stokes played 105 matches, scoring 2924 runs at an average of nearly 40 and picking up 74 wickets.

“We are not automobiles.” You can’t just fill us up and expect us to go out there and be ready to be refueled. “We had a Test series going on and then the one-day team had a series going on at the same time, which was a bit silly,” Stokes said on BBC’s Test Match Special.
