When Jonny Bairstow hit the winning six and he and Root were shaking hands with the New Zealand players. The latter ran to the crease, picked one stump, and handed it to Daryl Mitchell.
Mitchell led all scorers with 538 runs in six innings, while Root scored 396 runs in the same amount of time.
England won the first Test by five wickets at Lord’s before clinching the series by the same margin at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. They eventually whitewashed New Zealand in Headingley, Leeds.
While Jack Leach was named Player of the Match for the third Test, Joe Root and Daryl Mitchell were named Players of the Series.
