Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana’s rise is one of the few positives for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. In his first IPL season, the 22-year-old has taken 12 wickets in eight matches. In terms of defending champions’ scalps, he trails only Dwayne Bravo (16) and Mukesh Choudhary (13). However, Theekshana’s life was never easy. In a video released by CSK, Theekshana discusses his weight loss journey and how he overcame it.
“I was 107 kg at the time (U-19 days), so I had to work harder in the yo-yo test to reduce my weight and skin folds. In 2020, I completed everything and increased my fitness to the (required) level. I began to put more effort into my body “In the video, Theekshana stated.
“I represented my country in 2021. Then I got a chance in the final ODI against South Africa. Ajantha Mendis inspires me. He was my coach for the previous two to three years. I spoke with Ajantha Mendis in 2020. And spoke with MS Dhoni in 2022. I was a net bowler with CSK last year as well. I never imagined they’d bid on or choose me this year.”

Theekshana went on to explain how he had to sit for long periods of time on the bench. “I was in the U-19 squad in 2017-18, but I never got a chance to play because I failed a few fitness tests. In 2019, I had to be a water boy for ten games over three days. So I knew that if I didn’t succeed, I’d have to carry the water bottles again. But I kept believing in myself and maintained my never-say-die attitude. That is why I am still here in 2022 “He stated.
