Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has called for the return of bodyline bowling in the game’s longest format. The Rawalpindi Express has also requested that the ICC remove restrictions on the number of bouncers that can be bowled in an over.

It should be noted that the bodyline or fast leg bowling theory was first used by the England team during the 1932-33 Ashes series. The theory goes that the ball should be thrown at the batter’s body. As a result, batters are force to either play the ball or risk being hit in the body. However, the rule was quickly repeal. It should be note that since 1994, Test bowlers have been limited to a maximum of two bouncers per over.

During his playing days, the Rawalpindi Express was a lethal fast bowler. The 46-year-old holds the record for the fastest legal delivery and openly admits to attempting to chop off the head of former Australian captain Ricky Ponting.

Shoaib Akhtar: I want some character

The former Pakistan pacer has stated that modern-day players have become soft and that there is no longer any aggression. As a result, Akhtar has called for a return to the old rules in order to give Test cricket “character.”

‘They [modern cricket players] are very soft nowadays. I don’t believe the aggression is as strong now. I’m not sure why. I’m a throwback, like Ian Chappell. I want an unlimited number of bouncers. Bowling from the body should allow. What’s the harm? ‘I’m looking for some personality.’ The Daily Mail cited Akhtar.

Akhtar also recalled the famous 2004-05 Test series against Australia, in which he used his lethal bouncers to unsettle the batters.

“During the Test match, I thought (if nothing else is happening), let’s hurt someone.” That’s why I bowled the fastest spell. “I wanted to see if Ricky could match my pace, and I was purposely bowling bouncers to see if I could beat him, but before that, I had never beaten him with my sheer pace,” he added.
