Shakib Al Hasan will play a Test series against South Africa, according to BCB President.

Shakib Al Hasan will play a Test series against South Africa, according to BCB President. Hasan had previously informed BCB of his desire to take a break from Test cricket.

Shakib Al Hasan, a star Bangladesh all-rounder who had previously decided not to play in Bangladesh’s upcoming Test series against South Africa, will now play in the series. Notably, Hasan’s initial decision not to play was based on an expected assignment in the Indian Premier League for the 2022 season. However, after going unsold at the IPL mega auction last month, the 34-year-old is now available for national duty.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan commented on the matter, stating that the senior cricketer was previously expect to miss both series against South Africa and Sri Lanka, but with him not participating in the IPL now, there should be no reason for him not to play both Test series. He also stated that he sees no problem with a player opting out of a particular format as long as they notify him of their decision.

The IPL was preventing him from playing [the two-Test series], but now he will play [both series]” Nazmul Hassan

“Shakib wrote us a letter requesting a six-month break from Tests.” When we asked him about it, he said he’ll miss the Tests against South Africa and Sri Lanka due to the IPL. I replied that you must play against Sri Lanka, to which he agreed. I don’t see why he shouldn’t play the Test series in South Africa now that he’s not playing in the IPL. So forget about it. This is no longer on my mind. “The IPL was preventing him from playing [the two-Test series], but now he will play [both series],” Nazmul Hassan told ESPNcricinfo.

“Any player has the right to refuse to participate in any format.” That is not a problem for me. But they must inform me. Because of the IPL, he told me he doesn’t want to play Tests against South Africa and Sri Lanka. “I don’t see any other option now that it (participation in the IPL) isn’t happening,” he added.

The BCB is not an organization where players are treat as mere employees: Chairman of the BCB

Another BCB administrator, cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus, reiterated that players are not treated as employees and have complete freedom to choose which games they want to play and which they do not want to play, as they are not expected to play every match for the national team.

“No one is obligated to play every match. The BCB is not an organization where players are treated as mere employees. They, too, are stakeholders. “They have the freedom to decide how many matches they want to play,” Jalal Yunus explained.

Notably, the left-handed batter withdrew from the Test series against New Zealand in January, citing personal reasons. He had previously skipped the Sri Lanka Tests last year in order to participate in the IPL, as well as the South Africa tour in 2017-18 for the same reason. The former Bangladesh captain recently participated in a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against Afghanistan, which his team won 2-1. The Test series between Bangladesh and South Africa begins on March 31st in Durban.
