Top 5 Performances By Indian Bowlers In Tests In South Africa

Top 5 Indian: The three-match Test series between India and South Africa kicks off this Sunday at SuperSport Park in Centurion with the first match. The Indian team has never won a Test series in South Africa, and this would be their seventh visit to the country. Team India may not have won a series in South Africa, but the touring side put in a number of spectacular performances against the Proteas. India had had some amazing bowling performances in South Africa, from S Sreesanth’s masterpiece in 2006 to Jasprit Bumrah’s debut in Test cricket in 2018.

Let’s have a look at the best 5 performances by Indian bowlers ahead of India’s much-anticipated eighth tour to South Africa:

Sreesanth- 5/40 & 3/59 Johannesburg, 2006

S Sreesanth’s brilliance in 2006, when India won their first Test match in South Africa, will be remembered by all. In the first match of the series, India, led by Rahul Dravid, defeated South Africa by 123 runs at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. The visitors knocked out the Proteas for 84 runs after reaching 249 runs in the first innings, courtesy to a top-class bowling effort by Sreesanth, who took five wickets in the first innings and three wickets in the second.

Jasprit Bumrah- 5/54 & 2/57 Johannesburg, 2018

India lost the first two Tests of the three-match series despite a strong all-round performance on the field. After the 2014/15 Australia trip, this was India’s first Test series loss. India, on the other hand, won the series’ final game. Jasprit Bumrah, who was playing his debut Test series, took seven wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings.

Bumrah’s first five-wicket haul in Test cricket came in this match, and he has since played 24 Test matches and taken 101 wickets. In the forthcoming series, the pacer will also lead India’s bowling assault.

Harbhajan Singh- 4/10 & 2/70 Durban, 2010

Harbhajan Singh, India’s spinner, was at his best during the 2010 visit to South Africa. In the first innings of the three-match series’ second Test match, the off-spinner took four wickets for just ten runs. In their chase of 302, South Africa were bowled out for 131 runs in the first innings and only 215 runs in the second. India won by 87 runs in the Test match, their second victory in South Africa. In the second innings, Harbhajan took two more wickets, all of which came at important periods.

Harbhajan Singh also holds the record for the best bowling numbers by an Indian bowler in South Africa, with 7/120 in the first innings of the third Test in the series.

Anil Kumble- 2/60 & 6/53 Johannesburg, 1992

India’s first Test tour to South Africa concluded in a tie in the first match. The second Test ended in a draw as well, although Anil Kumble displayed some of his brilliance with the ball on a fast bowling pitch. In the second innings, Kumble took six wickets and two in the first.

This was also South Africa’s first Test series at home after the ICC removed their ban.

Javagal Srinath- 6/76 & 2/28 Port Elizabeth, 2001

After losing the first Test in the series in Bloemfontein, India was able to rescue the second Test in Port Elizabeth. In the second Test, Herschelle Gibbs made 196 runs, but it was India’s Javagal Srinath’s stunning spell of 6/76 that kept India’s hopes of drawing the series alive. In the second innings, Srinath took two wickets, but the match ended in a tie.
