Champions League: Real Madrid defeated Inter Milan 10-man to finish first in their group.

After a 2-0 win over Inter Milan on Tuesday. Real Madrid will advance to the Champions League last 16 as group winners. Toni Kroos and Marco Asensio each scored in the game.

A straightforward win at the Santiago Bernabeu. Boosted by Nicolo Barella’s red card in the 64th minute when Inter was one goal down, saw Madrid finish first in Group D, five points clear of Inter, who finished second. Inter needed to win to stay in first position, but Madrid were better after weathering an early storm, and Kroos’ goal placed them in command before Barella was sent off and Asensio’s magnificent shot sealed the victory.

Madrid’s reward is a guarantee that they will not be drawn against Liverpool. Bayern Munich, or Manchester City in the knockout stages when the draw is held on Monday. While Lionel Messi’s PSG will be among those in the runners-up pot.

“We wanted to finish first in the group so we could avoid the better clubs.” Luka Modric remarked.

Apart from an unexpected defeat away to Sheriff in September, Madrid’s group stage has been rather straightforward, with five victories, including two over Inter.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side will have to show they can still compete with the best in the later rounds. After being outplayed by Chelsea in the semi-finals last season.

Karim Benzema missed the game against Real Sociedad on Saturday due to an injury. And while Luka Jovic filled in, Madrid will expect to have Benzema back for the La Liga rivalry against Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

“We’ll have to wait a few days to see if Karim recovers, but I believe he will.” Ancelotti added.

Madrid leads Spain by eight points. And new coach Ancelotti has had a successful first few months with the club. Which includes a strong showing in the Champions League.

Early on, Inter were the sharper team, swiping the ball around Madrid. Who had their best chances on the break.

Inter came closest when Marcelo Brozovic hit the roof of the net with a dipping effort.

Madrid, on the other hand, grew into the game, with midfielders Luka Modric and Toni Kroos becoming increasingly influential.

Vinicius Junior looked dangerous. But lacked the calmness that Kroos displayed in the 17th minute when he scored the game’s first goal.

Casemiro dummied a right-footed pass, allowing Kroos to collect, and although wanting to take the shot with his right foot, he unwillingly took it with his left, driving straight and hard into the far corner.

Inter’s confidence was shaken by the score, and they were on the back foot for the rest of the half.

Vinicius wanted a penalty but was fouled too easily. And he subsequently fluffed a four-on-three situation on the break.

Jovic was played in but shot wide, while Rodrygo came close twice. With one attempt on the turn clipping the post and the other hitting the side-netting.

Inter’s Barella blazed over from within the box after halftime, and he was sent off soon after the hour.

Eder Militao shoved Barella out of the game and onto the sideboards. And Barella retaliated by swinging his right hand into Militao’s left thigh while on the ground. For the ensuing brawl, Militao received a yellow card, while Barella received a red card.

Inter’s hopes of a comeback were shattered, and all that was left was for Asensio. Who had come on as a substitute, to score Madrid’s second goal in the 79th minute with a beautiful curving shot that flew in off the post.
