At stumps on Day 3, Ashwin dismissed stand-in skipper Tom Latham. Will Young, and Ross Taylor, giving Team India entire control of the game. In 17 overs, he finished with figures of 3 for 27. On Sunday, Ashwin achieved a historic milestone after dismissing Young on 20.

For the highest number of times, the 34-year-old has eclipsed Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in taking 50 or more Test wickets in a calendar year (4).

On Day 4, Ashwin will try to add to his tally of 51 wickets this calendar year. To win the Mumbai Test and complete the series, India will need to take 5 more wickets.

Ashwin passed Harbhajan to become India’s third-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket during the first Test in Kanpur last month.

With 426 wickets, Ashwin is only 9 wickets away from becoming India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the longest format of the game, after Kapil Dev.

India declared at 276/7 in the second innings, giving the visitors a huge 540-run goal.

New Zealand were 140/5 at stumps on Day 3 and needed 400 more runs to win the game.
