Due to Virat Kohli‘s absence from the present T20I series between India and New Zealand, Blackcaps opener Martin Guptill has a chance to catch up to the former Indian T20I captain in the list of most T20I run scorers. Guptill’s 70 in the first encounter in Jaipur meant he just needed to score 11 runs in Ranchi to overtake Kohli, which he achieved in the match’s opening over. Guptill smashed back-to-back boundaries off Bhuvneshwar Kumar before getting a reprieve when KL Rahul dropped his catch to tie Kohli’s record. He then smashed another boundary off the Indian medium pacer to become the greatest run-getter in T20Is.
Chahar ultimately sent him back, putting the brakes on New Zealand’s innings, which they eventually managed to score 153/6.
Rohit Sharma, the Indian T20I captain, is third on the list, not far behind Guptill and Kohli. During the ICC T20 World Cup earlier this month, Rohit became the third batsman to amass 3000 runs in T20Is.
In 17.2 overs, India managed to chase down the 154-run goal, reaching 155 for three. Opening batsmen Rahul and Rohit scored 65 and 55 runs, respectively, to help India win the series.
