Maheesh Theekshana side strain set to rule out of Sri Lanka-Bangladesh match

Maheesh Theekshana: Mahela Jayawardene returns home after a successful team consultation.

Theekshana is unlikely to take a chance in Sri Lanka’s Super 12 opener against Bangladesh on Sunday after sustaining a flank injury in an eight-field win against the Netherlands in Sharjah.

Maheesh Theekshana, the mysterious spinner, took two wickets for three runs in his only over to reduce Holland to 20 from 3 but left the field to keep his side, with Dhananjaya de Silva substituting for the rest of the tickets issued.

Theekshana was treated in the locker room and it is likely that he will miss the match in Bangladesh.

“The physios have said the decision might be probably to leave him for the next game,” Bhanuka Rajapaksa, the middle-order batter, said. “We don’t want to risk it by playing him and then him not playing in the rest of the series. For the moment he will be missing the next game as far as I know. It’s not 100% decided yet, but most probably, he will miss the first game and then play the rest of the games.”

Sri Lanka’s bowling attack has been an important part of their success in the tournament, they have so far defeated teams of 96, 101, and 44 and Rajapaksa welcomed the combination of the high pace of Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kumara and the turn of Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga. He also said that Sri Lanka was ready to face “much harder sides” than in the preparatory phase.

Mahela Jayawardene, who was on the team as a consultant coach, will fly home before Super 12 as planned.
