BCB chief hits back at Mahmudullah – Never questioned players’ commitment

BCB chief: Bangladesh Cricket Board Chairman Nazmul Hasan has criticized T20I captain Mahmudullah for his ’emotional outburst’ at the current T20 World Cup and stated that he has never questioned the players’ commitment.

”There are two things that I did not get,” Nazmul told Somoy TV on Friday (October 22). “Like he said they feel bad when anyone questions their commitment. I don’t think anyone raised questions about their commitment. Not for once, I say anything about commitment. Secondly, he said I belittled them but I feel it’s an emotional outburst.

“I will still stick to my point that I was not happy with their approach, attitude, and planning in the first game,” the BCB chief added.

Nazmul had come into the squad strongly after the initial defeat against Scotland, which had an impact on the atmosphere in the locker room. Mahmudullah, after Bangladesh secured his place in Super12, could not contain his emotions in the press and responded to team critics that it was unfair to ask questions about the players’ commitment.

“We expect criticism when it is warranted, but if that is belittling, we feel bad,” Mahmudullah had said in a press conference after Bangladesh’s win in their second Round 1 game, over PNG on Thursday (October 21).

Nazmul also said that he was “quite surprised” that Mahmudullah took his opinion so personally.

“I think he (Mahmudullah) and other players need to understand one thing, like he said, that they are humans but on the same note, the team’s supporters and the spectators are also humans, and [so is] everyone in BCB.

“There is nothing to take personally because whatever we said was for the team and the country and not against any individual.”

The BCB chief also vaguely hinted at a possible change to the captain of the T20I in the near future. Bangladesh currently has three captains Mahmudullah (T20I), Tamim Iqbal (ODIs). And Mominul Haque (tests) and as it stands, the board could make the T20I skipper pay for this embarrassment in a world tournament.

“At this moment we are not thinking about captaincy change but it is natural that changes will come. And there is a possibility that captaincy will be changed though. I am not willing to disclose in which format,” he said.

The dispute between Mahmudullah and Nazmul is not new. As the former was also disappointed when the national captain decided to leave test cricket. After making his best-undefeated run of 150 against Zimbabwe.

Although Mahmudullah has yet to officially announce it. There has been media coverage that there is no way to reconsider his decision and return to Redball cricket.
