David Warner: David Warner would love to stay at Sunrisers Hyderabad for the next season, but admits that may not happen after being benched for the last five games of the 2021 IPL. He insists, however, that his fans will have plenty to look forward to in the “long time I have left”.
The Sunrisers removed Warner from the captaincy in the middle of the tournament, shortly before the India stage came to a halt due to Covid19. They replaced him with Kane Williamson, who first assumed the captaincy in 2018 when Warner was serving a one-year suspension for his role in the Newlands ball handling episode.
During the return leg of the 2021 IPL in the United Arab Emirates, Warner only played in two of the Sunrisers’ seven games before falling out entirely.
In one of those games, Warner was not even part of the contingent that traveled to the ground. Leading to speculation of a sequel with team management before head coach Trevor Bayliss was confirmed. That he was not the only senior player. that was left behind in the team hotel.
After Warner averaged more than 39 in each of his last seven seasons with the franchise. While beating more than 140 in six of them, Warner had a disappointing 2021. Averaging 195 runs in eight innings with an average of 24.37 and one the hit rate of 107, 73.
Warner has been reluctant, leading to his firing as captain. But has expressed grief at the way he has been treated throughout the season.
With the addition of two new teams to make the IPL a 10-team event starting in 2022. Warner could become one of the best options at the auction. Upon request, he will be happy to take on management duties.
