Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn shared his thoughts on MS Dhoni’s future in the Indian Premier League (IPL), saying that he was Chennai’s boss and that he would play next year if he managed to become the three-time champion and lead. another title in the UAE this year.
Dale Steyn emphasized that MS Dhoni didn’t do much for the bat at IPL 2021, but he has the respect of the franchise.
MS Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020 but continued to play for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.
Dhoni and his men struggled to gain momentum at the 2020 IPL in the United Arab Emirates and failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in their history.
However, CSK has gotten back in shape and is the first team to qualify for the IPL 2021 playoffs. CSK is practically at the top of the points table with 9 wins from 12 games and 18 points with Delhi Capitals
However, in the center of attention was MS Dhoni, who did not contribute much with the bat. Dhoni has only had 66 runs in 12 games with a below-average average and his highest score was 18. The CSK captain tried to move up the rankings but struggled to find the time and form.
“I mean he is the boss of Chennai. If you think Chennai, you think MS Dhoni. You know what, we got a couple of games left but they are already into the finals. But we haven’t seen Dhoni do anything. If he smashes the winning runs in the final, you can guarantee that he will be taking the gloves for Chennai in next year’s IPL,” Dale Steyn said
CSK will enter the mega auction before the 2022 IPL and Dhoni’s form remains questionable considering that he no longer plays competitive cricket outside of the IPL.
However, Dhoni was as good a captain as he was when he was a bat.
In particular, Kasi Viswanathan, CEO of Chennai Super Kings, hinted in a conversation with Indiatoday last year that Dhoni could even play for the three-time champion in 2022.
It will be interesting to see if CSK decides to stay with MS Dhoni if the former India captain decides to play another year in the IPL. CSK also has the option to use the Right To Match card to buy back its captain after he was fired from the roster ahead of the mega auction.
CSK will look to cement their place in the top 2 and have an additional shot at reaching the 2021 IPL final when they face their closest rivals Delhi Capitals in Dubai on Monday.
