INDW Cricket batter Punam Raut’s decision to walks-off: The decision of the Indian cricket team bat’s Punam Raut to leave despite the referee not knocking them out against Australia got experts and fans talking on Friday. On Day 2 of India’s first Pink ball friendly against Australia in Queensland.
Raut surprised everyone by choosing to walk after not knocking out. On the fourth ball of the 81 overs, left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux landed one to catch and spin. Raut made good progress but was unable to establish contact. The Australian players appealed and the referee shook his head. But to everyone’s surprise, including Australian outfield players, Raut left.
What made Raut’s decision even more interesting is the fact that there is no DRS in this test match and even after several replays, it could not be confirmed whether or not he had actually stolen it. Raut did 36.
Punam Raut walks off despite being given not out
Australia’s starter Beth Mooney, who spoke to commentators on the microphone almost immediately after the incident, said she wasn’t sure Raut had a bat.
“No way,” said Mooney when asked whether she would have walked like that. “Don’t know. The umpire said not out,” she said.
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Saba Karim said it was a strange call.
“It was very strange, to be honest. There is no DRS,” he said on Sony Sports Network.
Meanwhile, Smriti Mandhana destroyed some documents along the way to blow up a large century of a maiden, as India on 231/3 in the progress of dinner.
Mandhana made 127 of 216 balls with the help of 22 edges and six on the Carrara oval and added an Indian record of 102 runs in Australia with Punam Raut (36) for the second wicket for Shafali Verma on a rainy opening day.
However, the India starter overcame the initial nervousness and went about his business professionally while playing some nice shots, including a splendid direct shot from Annabel Sutherland.
Captain Mithali Raj (15th batting) got down to business immediately, sweeping and leading Gardner four at a time.
